Understand the importance of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.
Implement and practice the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.
List the signs and symptoms a newborn may not be getting enough milk.
Explain the difference between perceived and actual milk insufficiency.

Describe the importance of exclusive and continued breastfeeding.
Explain the global standards from each of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.
Outline information to be discussed with pregnant women in individual and group antenatal sessions.
Describe the basic characteristics and benefits of breast milk compared to artificial and animal milk.
Describe the challenges for a baby to feed at the breast and alternative feeding methods, in order to help the mother feed her baby at the breast again.

This course is presented in three modules:

1. BFHI Getting Started

This module will introduce all the basic practices and guidelines regarding Breastfeeding according to the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI). It will discuss the principles of maternal care facility practices and of the International Marketing Code of Breast-Milk Substitutes (the Code), as well as the approaches to implement the Ten Steps to Successful breastfeeding in your healthcare facility.

2. Breastfeeding Basics

This module will introduce the principles of the prenatal period through to the postnatal period, as well as discharge care. It will also discuss approaches to supporting, encouraging and implementing breastfeeding in your healthcare facility.

3. Breastfeeding Support in Special Circumstances

This module will introduce all the basic practices regarding the support of breastfeeding under special circumstances. It will discuss the principles of maternal care practices when the mother and/or the infant are facing a health issue and discuss approaches to implement in the healthcare facility, in order to encourage breastfeeding under those circumstances.
